Army in search efforts as Gazipur toll hits 33
Four more bodies have been pulled out of the rubble of Tampaco Foils Ltd factory in Tongi today, raising the death toll from Saturday's inferno to 33.
Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur SM Alam confirmed this to The Daily Star.
Around 6:30am, a team of army men led by Lt Col Shafiul Alam joined the search operation at the factory, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Deputy Director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Akteruzzaman.
At present, 22 firefighting units and the army team are working together in the rescue operation.
Factory owner, 7 others sued
Deceased factory worker Jewel’s father Abdul Kader filed a case against the Tampaco Foils Factory owner and seven others with Tongi Police Station last night.
Owner Mokbul Hossain was stated as the prime accused, Officer-in-Charge of Tongi Police Station Firoz Talukder told the correspondent.
Around 5:30pm yesterday, fire fighters and rescue workers pushed hard to douse the flame completely and looked for survivors under the debris of the four-storey building in the BSCIC industrial area.
On Saturday, 24 bodies were recovered and 50 suffered injuries after the fire broke out at the packaging factory around 6:00am, minutes before the workers were about to change shifts.
Four more bodies were pulled out of the debris of the factory yesterday.
Relatives take 2 bodies
Relatives of two deceased took the bodies from Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue tonight.
They are: Ismail Hossain, 43, of Shahjadpur in Sirajganj and Shi Rajesh Babu, 25, of Amtali in Tongi. Both of them were workers of the factory and went there for their duties in the morning shift.
Earlier, they were reported missing.
