Fire at Gazipur spinning mill, building collapses

The tin-shed building of a spinning mill collapsed after a fire broke out inside it in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur early today.
The fire broke out at Jamuna Spinning Mill in Shafipur Bazar area around 5:00am, said Apurba Bol, station officer of Kaliakoir Fire Service and Civil Defence.
On information, 14 firefighting units rushed to the spot and started working to douse the fire. There were no immediate reports of casualty and the origin of the fire could not be known immediately.
"We have brought the fire under control at 11:25am. We think it won't spread further," reports Gazipur correspondent quoting the fire service.
Harmuj Ali, manager of the factory's fire and security section, said at first the denim recycling section of the factory caught fire around 5:30am, which rapidly engulfed finishing, knitting, cotton and spinning sections.
"We initially tried to douse the fire using our extinguishers. Meanwhile, the firefighters rushed to the spot within 15 minutes into our call," Harmuj Ali added.

Two separate probe bodies have been formed to investigate the fire incident.
Gazipur District Administration constituted a five-member committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Rahenul Islam, to investigate the incident. The committee will submit a report within ten working days.
The other five-member committee has been formed by the fire brigade with its deputy director (operation) as its chief, which will find out the cause of the fire.
