FB message: HC wants explanation for 2yr jail to boy

The High Court today summoned Tangail's local authorities to show cause for handing two-year jail to a schoolboy over alleged threats to a lawmaker via Facebook.
Tangail's Sakhipur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and officer-in-charge of Shakhipur Police Station have been asked to appear before the court on September 27 to explain their actions on handing the punishment.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Rajgan Das passed the order on a suomoto move (of its own move) following a report published in The Daily Star today.
The bench also granted permanent bail to the boy after Supreme Court lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan placed the report before the HC bench for passing necessary order.
On Saturday, a mobile court led by Sakhipur UNO Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, also an executive magistrate, sentenced the schoolboy under the ICT act on charge of "threatening" a ruling Awami League lawmaker via Facebook messenger.
UNO Rafiqul passed the order a day after police detained the boy following a general diary filed by Anupam Shajahan Joy, lawmaker of Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency.
The executive magistrate Saturday said that the schoolboy was sentenced under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act. He, however, could not mention the section of the act.
