‘Settlers surround Khagrachhari villages after UPDF men fire blanks’

Bangalee settlers surrounded two villages of indigenous people in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachhari last night after UPDF activists allegedly fired blank shots, causing panic among the villagers. 

The incident took place at Sonaiaga and Brata Chandra Karbari Para areas of Ramgarh when some activists of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), a regional political party in Chittagong Hill Tracts, fired blanks around 10:30pm, said Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of Ramgarh Police Station.

Bangalee settlers in the locality chased the gang and later surrounded the two villages, the OC said.

On information, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members rushed there and brought the situation under control, the OC added.
