Demo for HSC admit cards at Dhaka college

Students of a college in Dhaka today demonstrated against authorities alleging they demanded extra money to hand over the admit cards of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinees.

Over a hundred girls of Dhaka Mahanagar Mohila College in Laxmibazar, Dhaka, took position near the gate of the college and demonstrated for about three hours since this morning.

“They said it is a fine for bad results in the model tests,” a demonstrator told The Daily Star seeking anonymity. “They demanded money, ranging from Tk 5000 to Tk 6,000, from everyone.”

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge KM Ashraf Uddin told The Daily Star that the issue has been resolved and the college would not be charging additional fees from the examinees.

A HSC examinee, Kaniz Fatema Monika, told The Daily Star that the authorities have given them admit cards after daylong demonstration, and that no additional fees were charged.

The Daily Star tried to reach the authorities of Dhaka Mahanagar Mohila College via phone, but, without any success.

There is an existing High Court ruling, issued on December 13 last year, that states no educational institutions can charge additional fees from HSC or SSC candidates to let them sit for the exams.

This year, the HSC and equivalent tests are scheduled to begin across the country from April 2.
