Protests flare up at Carmichael College
The teachers, high officials and other staff of Carmichael College Rangpur started an indefinite strike yesterday, demanding removal of its principal.
They boycotted classes and other academic activities bringing allegations of corruption, misuse of power, nepotism and misbehaviour against the principal, Dr Abdul Latif.
The students of the institution also joined the movement by forming a human chain on the campus. A protest procession was brought out, said witnesses.
Around 378 teachers and staff of the century-old college gathered at the administrative building around 9:00am and staged a sit-in.
All the classrooms remained locked, campus sources said.
“We will continue boycotting classes until our demand is met,” said Aktaruzzaman Chowdhury, general secretary of Teachers Welfare Association.
The teacher said the principal is often rude to the teachers, officials and staff.
He even threatens to transfer them if they protest the corruption and misbehaviour committed by him, said Aktaruzzaman.
Earlier on Thursday, the demonstrators announced the strike.
Talking to The Daily Star, Principal Abdul Latif said the allegations brought against him are false and fabricated. He later did not continue talking over the phone.
