Khaleda’s graft hearing cut short, next date Jun 22
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s graft hearing in Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases was cut short today as her lawyer pleaded an early conclusion citing physical illness.
Defence lawyer Abdur Reza Khan partially interrogated the Investigation Officer Harunur Rashid at court this morning, in presence of Khaleda, before seeking an early conclusion.
He told Judge Md Akhtaruz-zaman of the Special Judge Court-5 that he was ill due to Chikunguniya. The judge wrapped up today’s session in 30 minutes and set the next hearing date for June 22.
The BNP chief appeared before the court around 11:44am.
According to the charge sheet of the Zia Charitable graft case, Khaleda and three others abused power to collect Tk 6.19 crore for Zia Charitable Trust during the BNP-led government's tenure between 1991 and 1996.
On the other hand, the statement of the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case says the BNP chief, her son Tarique Rahman and four others embezzled Tk 2.1 crore by forming the charity that exists only on paper.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed both the cases.
