Hefajat wants removal of Lady Justice statue

Islamists Hefajat-e-Islam today threatened of “tougher movement” demanding removal of Lady Justice statue, which was relocated in a separate premises of the Supreme Court.

The organisation also demanded the removal of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha for what they claimed that CJ “failed to maintain neutrality over the issue.”

Leaders of the Qawmi madrasa-based organisation made the demands from a protest rally held in front of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the capital after the Jumma prayers.

They also urged the government to arrest eminent right activist Sultana Kamal for what they said “making derogatory comment about mosque.” 

It was after the demand of these Islamists that the incumbent government brought down the statue of Lady Justice from the Supreme Court premises and relocated it near the annex court building.

The incident drew widespread criticism in Bangladesh with many pulling up the government for “accepting the demand of the Hefajat-e-Islam”.
