Yanghee Lee to arrive in Dhaka Feb 19

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee is expected to arrive in Dhaka on February 19 to see the plight of Rohingya population in Bangladesh, who fled Myanmar in face of persecution.

Yanghee Lee, who undertook her fifth information-gathering visit to Myanmar from January 9 to 20, will visit the official Rohingya refugee camp and makeshift settlements in Cox's Bazar during her week-long visit, diplomatic sources in Dhaka said.

During her visit, Lee is expected to also talk to local authorities in Cox's Bazar, representatives of UN organisations and members of the international community, sources said. She is also expected to meet with high government officials and discuss a broad range of Rohingya and human rights issues.

After her visit to Myanmar, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on January 24 warned about possible reprisals against people she met during her recent official visit to the country. “There is one word that has hung heavily on my mind during this visit – reprisals,” the expert said.

“I must remind again that these attacks took place within the context of decades of systematic and institutionalised discrimination against the Rohingya population,” she noted. The expert also went to several affected Muslim villages.

Yanghee Lee of South Korea, is a professor at Sungkyunwan University. She is highly recognized nationally, regionally, and internationally for her expertise in human rights and served as member (2003-2013) and chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (2007-2011). She has also served as chairperson of the Meeting of Chairpersons of Treaty Bodies (2010-2011).
