A total of 531 educational institutions were damaged in polls violence across the country on January 5, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said today.

Of the institutions, 419 are primary schools, 82 high schools, 21 madrasas and nine are colleges, the minister told reporters while visiting a damaged school at Faydabad Government Primary School near Tongi Bridge in Dhaka this morning.

The minister however did not mention how much losses the authorities have incurred due to the damage.

Upazila education officers have been asked to submit reports regarding the institutions' damaged materials as soon as possible, he said.

The government will take initiatives for repairing these institutions after getting the reports, he added.

Most of the institutions came under attack on the night of January 3, two days before the 10th national election.
