Bangladesh are handed a whopping 106-run defeat by the hosts England at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff today. In chase of England's mammoth 386 for six, Bangladesh could only manage 280 in 48.5 overs.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first against England at Cardiff. 

"The pitch has been undercover for the last two days, so hopefully there's something in the first hour," says Mashrafe. "Playing an extra quick might be helpful in these conditions."

Bangladesh name an unchanged team.

"It's not a bad toss to lose, once the grass comes off the wicket it will stay the same conditions all day." said England captain Eoin Morgan.

Both the teams come into this match with one win and one loss from their first two matches of the World Cup -- Bangladesh won against the South Africa and lost to New Zealand, whereas England also won against South Africa but lost to Pakistan.

 

Bangladesh got the better of England in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup to reach the Quarter Final for the first time in 2015.

Cricket’s global crown will find a new resting place today when perennial bridesmaids England and New Zealand square off in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s. By the end of the final, cricket will have first-time world champions for the first time since 1996, when Sri Lanka etched its name into cricketing folklore.

England, the top-ranked ODI side, had been tipped for a maiden trophy before the tournament started, but New Zealand’s second successive final may have surprised some. Today’s final at Lord’s, starting at 10:30 am (3:30 pm Bangladesh time) will pit two contrasting cricketing philosophies against each other -- the pace-setters versus the adapters.

Since being booted from the 2015 World Cup at the group stage, England have undergone a renaissance. Fearlessness has been the mantra for the hosts -- they are arguably the only team capable of accelerating throughout the 50 overs of an ODI. They proved that for the umpteenth time in the semifinal against a formidable Australia. Having bundled their old foes out for 223, openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow did not give much space to Australia’s feted pacers, putting on 124 in just 17.2 overs. Even after their dismissals, England kept accelerating and romped home with 17.5 overs to spare as Joe Root and skipper Eoin Morgan ensured that the pressure on the Aussies does not relent.

Fittingly, England’s hyper-aggression was seeded by none other than New Zealand in the 2015 World Cup. Under Brendon McCullum’s captaincy, New Zealand had displayed the same streak of fearlessness as they romped unbeaten to the World Cup final before the wheels came off against Australia. Morgan had said before that it was their defeat to New Zealand, apart from the Adelaide loss against Bangladesh that sealed their exit, that brought home how far England lagged in terms of being at the cutting edge of ODI cricket.

“I think he has had quite a bit to do with it,” Morgan said at the pre-final press conference at Lord’s yesterday when asked about McCullum, whom he had just chatted with on the way to the press meet. “You could say about world cricket. We are close mates and he’s taught me a lot about leadership and I think in 2015 the way that New Zealand played, very similar to the way they are playing at the moment. They proved to everybody that you can perform at the highest level and get to the top by being yourselves and not trying to be somebody else, or a different team, or be somebody that is a bit of a novelty for everybody else, so that’s quite cool.”

Now, however, New Zealand are the adapters chasing England’s pace. That does not necessarily mean that they will be clear underdogs in the title-decider. They have proven to be remarkably awake to situations on the pitch. While McCullum blazed a new trail in 2015, Kane Williamson’s men are performing a function that has been a reality of New Zealand cricket since inception. Being a small country with a tiny talent pool, recognition of limitations has been their tried and tested method to success. And that is what they have done throughout the World Cup -- be it in pacing their chase against Bangladesh on June 5 and winning by a whisker, or resetting targets when batting in Manchester in the semifinal against India, when they bucked a three-match losing streak to beat the pre-tournament favourites in a match that rain had extended to the reserve day on July 10. Their adaptability has seen them through to the finals despite being the only team other than Afghanistan not to have scored 300 in the edition.

“I think most teams expected scores to be a lot higher than what we have seen, but the reality of it is that they have been quite tough surfaces and there’s been surfaces that have aged throughout perhaps a match on one day,” Williamson said. “Trying to make those adjustments are really important. I think both sides looked at the surface [in the semifinal], thought it was a really good one, and thought perhaps 300 was going to be at play, but after 15 overs or so, we were saying ‘this is really quite difficult and 300 looks like a long, long way away’ so if we are able to perhaps achieve something a little bit more realistic on that surface, then that gives you every chance to win. And we have done it on a number of occasions but we will have to be good at doing that tomorrow.”

The pitch at Lord’s bore a green look and that may favour the Kiwis a little more as their seam attack has been the most consistent in the World Cup so far. Their bowling attack is the only one to have conceded runs at less than five an over and against a side that have scored at more than six an over throughout the tournament, that will probably be the main battle in deciding the new champions.

While England, having won their league match comfortably on July 3, will start as favourites, both sides have shown that the tools at their disposal -- aggression and adaptability -- can win the day. As Williamson said, it will all come down to responding to conditions and realities on the day.

Bangladesh have been fined 5 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against England in a league match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on Tuesday, 10 October 2023.

Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Shakib Al Hasan's side was ruled to be 1 over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Shakib Al Hasan pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Paul Wilson, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena leveled the charge.

After being knocked out from the 2015 World Cup following a defeat to Bangladesh, English cricket has gone through a revolution, culminating in their first World Cup triumph at home four years later. According to the troop of English media who have travelled to India to cover the matches of the defending champions, the England team are well aware of the probable threat from Bangladesh at the world stage.

There was a sense of seriousness during the team meeting as the England cricketers were about to start their warm-up session yesterday, ahead of their second fixture against Bangladesh on October 10 in Dharamshala.

"The defeat to Bangladesh in 2015 was an infamous one for England, which eventually changed the entire English cricket and I am sure England won't take you guys lightly at all. Obviously there are a few dangerous players in the Bangladesh team but if you compare the XIs of the two sides, we expect England to win this game. So that itself is a bit of pressure for the England side," Simon Burnton, who works for The Guardian, told The Daily Star yesterday.

The England team management is seemingly worried about the team's lack of options in the opening slot. Jonny Bairstow, who will play his 100th ODI against Bangladesh opened alongside Dawid Malanin their match against New Zealand. These two are the only options England can rely on to open the innings at the moment.

Malan got out for 14 runs while Bairstow scored 33 in that game against the Kiwis. If one of these two batters suffer an injury at some stage of this competition, the English think tank may opt for either Ben Stokes or Jos Buttler to open the innings.

While the nine-wicket thrashing by New Zealand on Thursday came as a huge blow for England, the outfield of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium is adding more concern for the defending champions.

The journalists covering the event in Dharamshala were barred from enter the ground yesterday as groundsmen were busy preparing the outfield, which came under the microscope during Bangladesh's opening game against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Players from both teams found it difficult to field on the patchy surface. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was lucky to escape without a serious injury after his left knee stuck into the sandy outfield when he put in a dive during their six-wicket defeat to Bangladesh.

The poor condition of the Dharamshala outfield remained the main talking point among the members of the English media. It was also learnt that the England team management has decided to rest Stokes, who did not play against New Zealand, against Bangladesh too as the all-rounder is still recovering from a knee injury.

While England will be under some sort of pressure to get their World Cup campaign back on track, Bangladesh will have slight psychological edge following a comprehensive win in their opening match.

England's 3-0 defeat in their Twenty20 series in Bangladesh was a real "eye-opener" for the world champions, white-ball coach Matthew Mott said.

Bangladesh secured a 16-run victory in Mirpur on Tuesday to complete the whitewash and Mott said England would have to learn from it.

"We really wanted to finish well here. I think it's been a fantastic tour in terms of what we've been up against, a very strong home team," Mott said.

"That one hurts. To finish the way we did will leave a bit of a sour taste in our mouths. It should act as a real eye-opener on where we need to improve."

England were short on batters for the series after Tom Abell and Will Jacks were forced to withdraw due to injuries, and Mott defended the decision to not call up replacements.

"There was a realisation that we were probably better off investing in some batters here and putting them under pressure in these games. You only learn from your mistakes," Mott added.

"The opportunities they were given here will give them time to reflect and when we get into pressure situations in World Cups, I am confident that it will have been the right decision."

However, former England captain Nasser Hussain suggested they were looking too far ahead to the 50-overs Cricket World Cup, which will take place in India in October and November.

"I see what they're trying to do, but the short-term view and the long-term view, you've always got to balance that as a selector ...," Hussain told Sky Sports.

"I just think not having the extra batter sends the wrong message ... Pay attention to this game in front of you, and if you do that then the future will look after itself."

Bangladesh clinched a maiden T20I series win over England as they beat the visitors by four wickets in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday. 

With this win, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the series with a game in hand. 

Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up four wickets to help restrict England to 117 while Najmul Hossain Shanto scored an unbeaten 46 in reply as Bangladesh chased down the target with seven balls to spare.

Batting first, England managed to post a meagre 117. 

A reshuffle in the batting line-up saw Dawid Malan open the innings with Phil Salt. The former struggled to get going and fell to Taskin Ahmed in the third over when he tried to lift a good-length delivery over mid-on. It went the opposite of what he tried to do as he could only top-edge it to deep third-man.

But the main aggressor was Salt, who hit three fours and one six for his 19-ball 25, to take England to 50 after the first six, with Moeen Ali at the other end.

Salt, however, couldn't capitalize on his start and was dismissed by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan in the seventh over.

Salt, it was one-way traffic as the Tigers spinners put a stranglehold on the England batters and took wickets at regular intervals.

Speedster Hasan Mahmud bowled a spearing yorker to castle danger man Jos Buttler, and Miraz joined in on the act later on as he spun webs on the batters scalping four wickets.

Mustafizur Rahman's slower got the better of Ben Duckett leaving the left-handed pacer only one wicket shy of 100 T20I wickets.

Shakib and Taskin Ahmed scalped one wicket each on a day when the skipper decided to use a total of eight bowlers.

In reply, Bangladesh lost openers Liton Das and Rony Talukdar inside the powerplay leaving them two down for 32 after the end of the first six.

Shanto stood tall from one end to safeguard Bangladesh through difficult phases as he stitched successive impactful partnerships with Towhid Hridoy and Miraz to safeguard the Tigers to a memorable win.

Hridoy impressed with his 18-ball 17, and Miraz's 16-ball 20 featured two sixes.

But a flurry of wickets that saw Miraz, Shakib, and Afif get dismissed within the space of two overs seemed to have caused jitters in the Tigers camp but Taskin smashed back-to-back boundaries off Chris Jordan in the 19th over to take Bangladesh home.
