Knee Deep in
Water

As the water bodies and canals in and around the metropolis have gradually being encroached on, the problem of water-logging has risen to an alarming height. The authorities seem blind to the plight of the people trapped in water. After few hours of splash in any given day, countless areas of Dhaka are swamped. And they remain so hours on end adding to the woes of the people of a city that is already inundated with many urban ills. Often the drainage system is blamed for the ordeal. The 260-kilometre network of sewers has proved to have failed to cope with the heavy downpour that splashes the city during the monsoon. But whatever the reason, some areas in Shampur, Tejgoan, Azimpur, Mogbazaar are always the worst hit zones after few hours of rain. And on top that, in some of these areas, water-logging remains a problem year round due to clogged sewers.
