Sherpur-1 BNP candidate 'injured in attack'

BNP candidate Sunsila Jabrin Priyanka from Sherpur-1 claimed that she and her party men were attacked while they were conducting election campaign this afternoon.

“When I along with my supporters reached Ghughurakandi Bazar area in Sherpur Sadar upazila, a group of men from Awami League and its front organisations attacked with sticks and chased us around 2:45pm”, Priyanka said.

“At one stage, they started throwing brickbats at my car and motorbikes of the rally," alleged Priyanka.

“The bricks and the shards of broken glasses hit me. My mother Nelufa Khanam, maternal aunt Silvia Khanam Soma and brother Shah Poran who were inside the car also got injured”, she said.

AL men again attacked their vehicles and chased the party men at Kusumhati area when they were returning Sherpur, she claimed, adding that some 20 party workers also sustained injuries in the attack.

The injured were given first aid, party sources said.

Priyanka also alleged her chief election agent Hatem Ali and her cousin Roman were arrested from Sherpur town after the incidents.

Denying the allegations, AL candidate Atiur Rahman Atik brought counter allegations and said BNP men attacked peaceful campaign of AL workers.

Mohammad Firoz Al Mamun, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Sherpur Sadar, said he was not aware of the incidents yet.

Admitting the attacks and counter-attacks between AL and BNP, Md Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station said none lodged any complaint yet.
