‘Brother, won’t you give us money?’

“Wherever I am going to distribute leaflets, people are asking me brother won’t you give us money?” says Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) candidate for Noakhali-5 Sirajullah Siraj.

“Most of the people are saying this to me” he told this correspondent visiting the constituency.

“So what can we conclude? The two parties (Awami League and BNP) have spoilt the character of the people to the extent that when approached even by a good a person they think this person will offer them money,” he said.

“They (AL and BNP) have done it by giving people money, imparting unethical education and evil politics.”

Siraj does not want to put blame on the people. In his opinion, “They have flawed the character of people and collapsed the very fabric of the society.”

He told The Daily Star that he is telling people that he does not have the ability to offer them money. He has sought help from his friends and relatives to meet the expenses of the election. The amount will not be more than Tk two lakhs.

“We don’t indulge in this sort of practice. When a candidate is buying votes that means he is just making investment. They will carry out business with people’s money, if they are elected,” he added.

“The society must be uplifted from this condition. It will take time; it may not happen in my lifetime. The society must be freed from the perverse politics.”

Commenting on the other candidates of his constituency, he said, “I don’t consider anyone as a heavyweight candidate in the elections. I think Obaidul Quader, Moudud Ahmed are human beings, so am I.”
