Oikyafront calls urgent meeting today

The steering committee of Jatiya Oikyafront has called an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss about the country’s overall political situation ahead of the December 30 national election.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at Oikyafront office in Paltan area at 3:00pm, Latiful Bari Hamim, a media wing member of the alliance, told The Daily Star.

WHAT DID OIKYAFRONT SAY ABOUT POLLS SITUATION?

Oikyafront convener Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday alleged that the government had made “the arrangement” to oust it from the election by pulling strings of the administration, judiciary, law enforcers, goons and the Election Commission.

The alliance has long been alleging that a congenial atmosphere for polls is absent.

WHY DID OIKYAFRONT WANT CEC’S RESIGNATION?

On December 25, a Jatiya Oikyafront delegation, led by Kamal, walked out of a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda following a heated exchange over the role of police during electioneering.

Later that night, the Oikyafront at a press conference demanded immediate resignation of the CEC and appointment of a “neutral person” to the post for the sake of a free and fair parliamentary election.

WHAT IS JATIYA OIKYAFRONT?

The Jatiya Oikyafront is an alliance of the BNP, Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, ASM Abdur Rob’s Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, and Mahmudur Rahman Manna’s Nagorik Oikya.

The Oikyafront was formed on October 13 with the demands of a national election under a neutral government after dissolution of parliament and release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
