Do you like computer games? Many people, adults and children
spend many hours playing games on their computers. Some claim
this is the reason for increased obesity and a lack of social
skills in today's youth they no longer spend hours playing
games outside with their friends, instead they sit indoors,
not moving or talking to anyone other than the computer. Below
is an article about computer games. The paragraph headings
below are in the correct order. The paragraphs are not. Match
the paragraphs to the headings.
A.
This "cartoon violence" may have been more acceptable
with older cartoon characters but as characters have become
more "people like" - combined with bad language
and realistic sound effects - concerns have been raised about
links to aggressive behaviour and violence.
B.
There is no evidence at the moment linking an increase in
violence in computer games violence with aggressive or violent
behaviour in children, but at the same time should it be acceptable
for computer games to depict graphic scenes of violence? What
lessons will players take from games like "Grand Theft
Auto", where players speed through city streets to reach
their destination in the quickest time regardless of pedestrians
in their way, or "Hooligans: Storms over Europe",
where men storm football pitches, fight rival gangs and attack
police? Are these computer games blurring the difference between
right and wrong?
C.
Worried parents have welcomed computer game classification
whereby games are given similar ratings to films, warning
people of violent and sexual content. Games that fall outside
the highest 18+ category are governed by the British Board
of Film Classification and can be banned.
D.
Today's video game worlds are so detailed they give the player
a realistic and rewarding experience that can compete with
the best that films and literature have to offer. But are
increasingly life-like computer games a good thing, especially
those that are first-person games where the player takes an
active role like pulling the trigger in armed battle?
E.
If your child is at home playing a computer game, at least
you know where they are and that they are safe. Using a computer
for fun can promote a child's understanding of how to use
a computer, which is an essential skill in today's workplace.
The importance of computers will only increase in the future
so knowing how to use a computer and being comfortable with
on is vital for future success. Another counter argument to
the anti-computer games lobby is that no one ever broke an
arm, or got hit in the face while playing a computer game
can you say the same for cricket?
Rather
than playing computer games, here are some language games,
so practise your English and have fun!
