Sci-Zone

Sorry folks. Your favourite funnyman has gone missing in action. It is rumored that he had one Double Cola too many and his brain went into sugar shock and busted a fuse. Moral of the story? Mone lage dola might not really mean what you think it means.

Okay, so you won't bust a fuse from an excess of cola. But before you sigh with relief and reach for that Virgin (the soda!), do consider a few facts. The average pH of carbonated soft drinks is 3.4, which is strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones. Don't believe me? Leave a tooth inside a glass of Coke or Pepsi overnight, and see if you can find it in the morning. Added to the dangerously low pH are the high sugar content, the low nutritional value, and a high concentration of artificial additives, making a deadly concoction. And we drink this stuff!

So you're thinking maybe those fruit-flavoured drinks are a safe bet? Think again. Your average imitation fruit drink is mostly sugar and water, with artificial flavors and colours added, and contains very little pure fruit juice. Safer than Coke, maybe, but if you're planning to go on a diet anytime soon, you don't want to drink a lot of these. Go for low-fat yoghurt drinks instead.

Many of us love French fries for tiffin. They're potatoes after all, and potatoes are vegetables, and Mom's always yelling at us to have more, so they've got to be healthy, right? Wrong. Although made from potatoes, French fries and chips are deep fried and contain lots of salt and fat.

I could go on and on about the ills of junk food, but I don't want to put you off your food, or the canteens out of their business. So I'll leave you here with a final bit of advice: if your school serves noodles, chotpoti, or deshi fast food, those will be a far healthier choice for lunch than the usual fries and burgers and soda.

Todays Star: Zinedine Zidane

History:
Bred in the back streets of Marsailles where even the long arm of the law struggles to reach at times, Zinedine Zidane has evolved in to the best footballer on the planet.

Zidane turned professional with AS Cannes after being famously rejected by his hometown club Olympique Marsailles for apparently being too slow. He played his first professional game at the age of 16 and by the time he was 17 he was turning up regularly for AS Cannes in the First Division.

After a stunning first season and a lukewarm second Zidane felt it was time for a change and switched to Bordeaux.

The beginning with Bordeaux was hard on 24-year-old Zidane, as it forced him to adapt, but once he did, he did so with flying colours. Not only did Bordeaux qualify every year that Zidane played with the team, but Bordeaux also qualified for the UEFA Cup through Intertoto and went to the final in 95-96, Zidane's last year with the team.

At the same time, Juventus sought out Zidane, and after his four crucial seasons with Bordeaux, he moved to Torino. Again, Zidane was forced to adapt to the Italian way of playing as well as to the lifestyle, but after his first year, he was a bona fide star. It was with Juventus that Zidane won titles, as Winner of the 1996 European Super Cup, the 1996 European/South American Cup, Winner of the 1997 League Super Cup, named 1997 and 1998 Italy Champion, and Finalist of the 1997 and 1998 Champions League.

In 2001, Real Madrid paid Juventus a world record sum of $67 million for Zidane's services and since then he has won the Spanish league and World Club Cup titles along with the Champions League, courtesy one of the best Zidane goals ever, with Los Galacticos. His individual awards include the Golden Ball and the Ballon D Or in 1998 and he was named Best Player of the Year by the FIFA in 1998, 2000 and 2003.
