Rising Soap

Return of the Rising Soap

They thrill you, amuse you, bore you to death, or simply annoy you, but there's no escaping them as they invade your Thursday mornings. Ever wondered about the pesky people who bring you the Rising Stars? Starting this week, we'll be bringing you the inside scoop on the new RS team and their behind-the-scene antics. Read on, and enjoy…

Part One: Enter the team…
This week, we're going to start off by introducing you to the new team…you're probably familiar with most of their names and some of their work, but we're going to show you the loons behind the lines they write:
Our Regulars

The Girl Next Door: You're probably familiar with her annoying polls and discussions, but beneath the sickly-sweet goody-two-shoes exterior of this columnist lies a woman of steel.

Niloy: He games till his eyes bleed, spends an insane amount of time online, and his controversial opinions have raised a lot of eyebrows, but when he unleashes his Secret Weapon, his irresistible pout, there's absolutely no way we can stay mad at him.

Crucified: Wrong! Move aside, Hannibal Lector. This crazy columnist gives a whole new meaning to the word 'psychopath'.

Durdana Ghias: Our in-house historian might come across through her writings as a wise and solemn person, but beware of the sharpshooter that lies beneath

Shayera Moula: When she's not showing you yet another way to Do it Yourself, she's making us giggle with her impossible hypothetical scenarios.

The Hitchhiker: You'd expect the gossip guru of the True Stories column to be a chirping chatterbox, right? Wrong. This shy guy never fails to amaze us with his bashfulness.

Tawsif: This Word Wobbles wizard is known in the RS, not for his vocabulary, but for his charm. The ladies simply love his smooth lines.

Gokra: Not only does he get to watch all the latest movies, he actually makes his buck by telling people what he thought of them. Still need a reason to hate his guts?

Lancer: Though not technically a member of our team, his frequent Anime Reviews have quickly gained a formidable fan base. So what's he like in real life? No one in the team has really met him, so that's a mystery.
Also Starring:

Tashmia Zaman: 'Taz' to us, she's the little princess who's so sweet and innocent, she makes you believe that unicorns, fairies, and Santa Claus might not be so impossible after all.

Taskin: Taskin's always talking. Even in real life. The rest of us are either busting our guts laughing at his jokes, or staring at his multicolored hair.

Nusrat: If you can separate her irrepressible giggles from what she's trying to say, she's fun to gossip with.

Maherin: When she's not spouting A-level Economics, this dogged debater is out seeking out all the real-life Rising Stars and bringing them to the limelight.

Ayesha and Marwa: They're two different people, really. At least, we think so…since they're always together, it's hard to tell sometimes.

Anita Yusticia: Would you believe it if we told you that the drawing of the girl in the Tête-à-tête column was done by a 14-year-old? Well, this quiet, talented young girl prefers to let her art speak for her, and thanks to TGND's Thoughts of the Week, it actually does.

Maliha Bassam: This young lady is known for her strong opinions against feminism and female power-plays. She shocks the girls with her frank views, but the guys just love her.

AES: This guy attracts "Weird Teachers" and "Small Men" like moths to a flame, like iron filings to a magnet, like Eid shoppers to a sale…okay, I'll shut up now.

So what happens when this mad, mad group is unleashed on Dhaka City together? Find out next week, when Rising Soap returns…

From Banna

Dear Nafisa,
This apology might not help solving the problem thatÊI have created. I really did not mean to put you in trouble. He thought it was you, who picked up the phone.ÊI will be glad if you forget the past and start talking all over again.
When I asked God for a rose, he gave me a garden full of roses. When I asked for a river, he gave me an ocean and whenÊI asked for an angel,ÊI found you.....
Yours, Sajan.

Bits & pieces

GM on Microsoft

Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics

For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive but would run on only five percent of the roads.

The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

CAKE Personality Test

If you were buying a cake and you had your choice of the following, which would you choose:

Angel food
Brownies
Lemon Meringue
Vanilla with Chocolate Icing
Strawberry Short Cake
Chocolate on Chocolate
Ice Cream
Carrot Cake

OK - Now that you've made your choice, this is what research says about you:

Angel food ... Sweet, loving, cuddly. You love all warm and fuzzy items. A little nutty at times. Sometimes you need an ice cream cone at the end of the day. Others perceive you as being child-like and immature at times.

Brownies... You are adventurous, love new ideas, and are a champion of underdogs and a slayer of dragons. When tempers flare up, you whip out your sabre. You are always the oddball with a unique sense of humour and direction. You tend to be very loyal.

Lemon Meringue... Smooth, sexy, and articulate with your hands, you are an excellent after-dinner speaker and a good teacher. But don't try to walk and chew gum at the same time. A bit of a diva at times, but you have many friends.

Vanilla with Chocolate Icing ... Fun-loving, sassy, humorous. Not very grounded in life, very indecisive and lack motivation. Everyone enjoys being around you, but you are a practical joker. Others should be cautious in making you mad, however, you are a friend for life.

Strawberry Short Cake... Romantic, warm, loving. You care about other people and can be counted on in a pinch. You tend to melt. You can be overly-emotional and annoying at times.

Chocolate on Chocolate ... Sexy, always ready to give and receive. Very creative, adventurous, ambitious, and passionate. You have a cold exterior but are warm on the inside. Not afraid to take chances. Will not settle for anything average in life. Love to laugh.

Ice Cream... You like sports, whether it be baseball, football, basketball, or soccer. If you could, you would like to participate, but you enjoy watching sports. You don't like to give up the remote control. You tend to be self-centred and high maintenance.

Carrot Cake... You are a very fun loving person, who likes to laugh. You are fun to be with! People like to hang out with you. You are a very warm hearted person and a little quirky at times. You have many loyal friends.
