Four accused denied bail in Gang-rape case
A Dhaka court on January 9 rejected bail petitions of four accused in a case filed for violating a college girl in Savar last November. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Shahidul Islam passed the order and sent them to jail after Ashraful Islam, sub-inspector of Savar Police Station, produced them before the court on expiry of their four-day remand. The accused are Rayhan, 20, a second-year student of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in the capital, Mohidur Rahman, 21, a first-year student of Savar College, Danesh, 32, neighbour of the victim, and the victim's friend Liza, 20. Earlier on January 7, the rape victim recounted her chilling tale before a judicial magistrate describing the trauma she went through in Savar last November. -The Daily Star January 10 2013.
HC to stop earth-filling
The High Court on January 9 directed the authorities concerned to stop earth-filling and encroachment of the Hurasagar river in Bera upazila, Pabna within 48 hours. In response to a writ petition, the court ordered the authorities to suspend the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Bera Pourasava and Water Development Board (WDB) for “development work” on the river's land. It asked the authorities to submit a progress report on compliance of the directives before it in two weeks. LGRD secretary, WDB chairman, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Pabna, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Bera upazila, officer-in-charge of Bera Police Station, mayor and executive engineer of Bera Pourasava have been made respondents to the rule. The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed came up with the order and rule after hearing the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).- The Daily Star January 10 2013.
HC asks for all documents on licences
issued to Tazreen Fashions Ltd
The High Court on January 8 directed the government to submit in two weeks all documents on licences issued to Tazreen Fashions Ltd in Ashulia where a blaze killed 112 workers in November last year. In response to a writ petition, the court also asked the authorities concerned to submit all inspection reports on the fire safety and evacuation plan of the garment factory in six weeks. The HC also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks as to why its failure to follow the provisions of the Labour Act, 2006 and the Fire Prevention Act, 2003 should not be declared illegal. In the rule it asked the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to pay adequate compensation to the families of the workers killed and injured, and take legal action against the owner of Tazreen Fashions Ltd. - The Daily Star January 9 2013.
HC orders Mosharraf to surrender
The High Court on January 8 directed former BNP state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain to surrender before lower court within 30 days in the Niko corruption case. The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against former prime minister Khaleda Zia and several others including Mosharraf in December 2007. The charges say the accused abused power to award Canadian company Niko a gas exploration and extraction deal. On January 8, the HC bench of Justice Khondker Musa Khaled and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the order after rejecting Mosharraf's petition challenging the legality of the case. The order came after the former state minister's lawyers said their client would not run the petition. - The Daily Star January 9 2013.
Why not suspended judge's bail to be granted: HC
The High Court Jnauary 8 asked the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks why Md Javed Imam, a suspended senior assistant judge of Bhola District Judge's Court, should not be granted bail in a case filed on charge of possessing Phensidyl. A HC bench issued the rule following a petition filed by Javed on January 2 seeking bail in the case. He was suspended after police arrested him allegedly with 342 bottles of Phensidyl in the capital last December. - The Daily Star January 9 2013.

A High Court bench on January 8 refused to pass any order on a bail petition filed by Bangla daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and its publisher Hasmat Ali in connection with a case. The case was filed with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka against the duo last December for publishing a Skype conversation between former International Crimes Tribunal-1 chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq and expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert Ahmed Ziauddin. The HC bench also sent back the bail petitions to the petitioners.- The Daily Star January 9 2013.
