Hearing on Khaleda's appeal June 12
The Supreme Court on March 07 fixed June 12 for hearing an appeal filed by the BNP chairperson against a High Court verdict which cleared the way for proceedings on the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case against her at a lower court. Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain set the date after Khaleda's lawyers moved a leave to appeal petition to fix the hearing date. The High Court on December 14 last year, in a verdict, rejected a petition submitted by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to stop the proceedings against her in the case. Khaleda filed the leave to appeal petition on March 6 with the SC through her lawyers challenging the HC verdict.-The Daily Star March 08 2012.
HC summons Prof Bari
The High Court on March 05 summoned Prof Ershadul Bari, former vice chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), before it on March 12 in connection with a charge of distorting the history of the War of Liberation. The HC also asked six academics, including Prof Harun, to appear before it. The bench on March 1 asked them to appear before it to explain their roles in distorting information on the War of Liberation in two textbooks written by them under BOU. Supreme Court lawyers Altaf Uddin Ahmed and Mahmud Hossain filed the petition with the HC in January 2010, saying that Sociology 2nd paper and Civics 2nd paper of HSC under the BOU termed late president Ziaur Rahman as the individual who had declared the country's independence, although the HC in a verdict in 2009 ruled that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had declared the independence on March 26, 1971.-The Daily Star March 06 2012.
HC orders fresh probe
The High Court on March 04 asked the law secretary to form a committee led by a deputy secretary of his ministry to investigate the incident of damage to two century-old Hindu temples at Palita of Rajoir upazila in Madaripur. During the hearing of a suo moto rule, the court said the deputy secretary make a comprehensive probe report by talking with the people concerned of the templesone of Goddess Kali and another of God Gopal, and submit the report to it by April 8. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Jahangir Hossain Selim ordered the deputy commissioner (DC) of Madaripur to maintain status quo in the temples area till further orders. The people involved with the temples cannot be disturbed in any manner, the court said.-The Daily Star March 05 2012.
