Hearing on plea to quiz Alim adjourned
The International Crimes Tribunal on October 18 fixed October 23 as the next date of hearing on a petition seeking its permission to interrogate former BNP lawmaker Abdul Alim, accused of war crimes, at a Dhanmondi safe home. The three-member panel led by its Chairman Nizamul Huq set the new date after defence lawyer Md Tarikul Islam submitted a petition before it seeking adjournment of the hearing till October 30. Tarikul Islam told the tribunal that they were seeking the adjournment as defence counsel Tajul Islam went abroad. Earlier on October 16, the ICT investigators submitted through the prosecution the petition for permission to interrogate Alim.-The Daily Star online edition October 18 2011.
HC questions sponsored TV news, headlines
The High Court on October 17 questioned the legality of sponsored news and headlines on television. An HC rule asked the authorities concerned to explain in two weeks why broadcast of news and headlines, sponsored by different organisations, on TV channels should not be declared illegal. The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Md Nuruzzaman issued the rule following a writ petition filed last week by MA Matin, a retired teacher of Dhanmondi Government Laboratory High School. The petition said most TV channels never publish news that goes against the interest of organisations or persons paying them to air advertisements. The people's right to information is thus denied. -The Daily Star October 18 2011.
Legality of coaching centres
challenged
The High Court on October 17 questioned the legality of running coaching centres alongside classrooms by the teachers of schools and colleges that enjoy the government's monthly payment order (MPO) facilities. In a rule, the court ordered the government to explain within four weeks why it should not be directed to stop the teachers working for coaching centres. It also asked the government why it should not be directed to enact a law in this regard. Secretaries to the Prime Minister's Office, Cabinet Division and ministries of education and law, director general of directorate of education and heads of 14 prominent schools and colleges in Dhaka including Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and Motijheel Ideal School and College, have been made respondents to the rule. The bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Ziaul Kabir Dulu, a guardian of a Dhaka Ideal School and College student.-The Daily Star October 18 2011.
HC rule on govt to bring back Bangladeshis
The High Court on October 17 issued a rule upon the government why it should not be directed to take measures to bring back around 500 Bangladeshis, who have been languishing in a Saudi jail, to the country. The court issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK). It directed the government to explain why its 'inaction' to bring them back from Dammam Jail in Saudi Arabia should not be declared illegal. ASK recently filed the writ petition following a report published in a Bangla national daily on October 13 saying that more than 500 Bangladeshi nationals have been languishing in the Dammam Jail in Saudi Arabia. The HC bench of Justice Mohammad Bazlur Rahman and Justice M Enayetur Rahim made the secretaries to the ministries of foreign and home affairs respondent to the rule.-The Daily Star October 18 2011.
Appeal made to discharge Duke
The counsel of Lt Commander (retd) Saiful Islam Duke, nephew of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, on October 17 appealed to a Dhaka court to discharge his client from the charges of 21 August grenade attack cases. Duke's lawyer Abdur Rezak Khan placed the appeal as Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 resumed the charge framing hearing against BNP Senior Vice-President Tarique Rahman and 51 other accused in the cases. Opposing the defence plea, the prosecution said Duke helped Harkat ul-Jihad (Huji) leader Moulana Tajuddin, brother of detained BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu, flee from the country after committing the offences.-The Daily Star October 18 2011.
HC doubts legality of Medical admission
The High Court on October 16 questioned the legality of the admission test of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) held on September 30 for 2011-12 sessions. In response to a writ petition claiming anomalies in some questions of the test, the court issued a rule asking the government to explain in this regard in two weeks. The HC bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif also directed the authorities to submit the Bangla and English versions of the original question papers before it within two weeks for their scrutiny. Md Golam Mostafa, guardian of one examinee, filed the writ petition claiming a group of examinees found anomalies in at least 15 questions of the Bangla and English versions.-The Daily Star October 18 2011.
