Accused lawyer held
Law enforcers arrested a lawyer on August 11 on charge of assaulting police personnel and preventing them from carrying out their duties on the Supreme Court premises. Detective Branch of police picked up MU Ahmed from his Segunbagicha residence in the city, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station. MU Ahmed suffered a stroke after the arrest, the OC said adding that he was admitted to National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD) under police custody. Earlier, the High Court on August 10 rejected bail pleas of MU Ahmed and 10 other pro-BNP lawyers in two cases filed on charge of assaulting police personnel and preventing them from discharging their duties on the court premises. Three face contempt of court rule
The High Court on August 10 issued a contempt of court rule on two politicians and moderator of a talk show on Ekushey Television for "derogatory" remarks about it. An HC bench asked them to appear before it on August 18 to explain the comments made in the talk show. It also asked them to explain within two weeks why they should not be punished for contempt of court. Respondents to the rule are BNP chairperson's adviser Ahmed Azam Khan, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal leader Razequzzaman Ratan and Anjan Roy, who moderated the show. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore issued the rule. The court said in the talk show,it was stated that this court wrote an essay on river while writing an essay on cow. The court did this by making an observation about opposition leader (Khaleda Zia) while passing order in a case against Islami Oikya jote chief Fazlul Haque Amini, the talk show mentioned.- The Daily star August 11 2011.
11 pro-BNP lawyers denied bail
The High Court on August 10 turned down bail pleas of 11 pro-BNP lawyers accused of assaulting police personnel and preventing them from carrying out their duties on the Supreme Court premises. Twelve lawyers filed two separate petitions on August 3 and 7 in connection with two criminal cases. However, ABM Waliur Rahman Khan, voluntarily withdrew his name from the list of petitioners. The HC bench comprising Justice Mohammad Anwarul Haque and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque summarily rejected their bail petitions as the accused lawyers did not appear before the court.- The Daily star August 11 2011.
Judicial probe body formed
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) of Dhaka formed a one-member judicial committee on August 10 to probe the killing of six students at Aminbazar on the outskirts of the capital last month. The committee manned by Metropolitan Magistrate Utpal Chowdhury has been asked by the High Court to submit the report within the next 30 days. Six students were beaten to death by several hundred villagers at Keblar Char in Aminbazar on July 18. In response to a writ petition filed by the National Forum for Protection of Human Rights, the HC on August 3 asked the CMM to form a committee with a magistrate to investigate the tragic incident. On July 28, the government ordered to include Aminbazar killing in the home ministry's list of sensational cases.- The Daily star August 11 2011.
ACC given 2 months for probe
A Dhaka court on August 9 gave the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) two months to probe the case against former premier Khaleda Zia and three others for abusing power to set up a charitable trust. After examining the case document, the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court accepted the case and asked the ACC to complete the investigation by October 10. The anti-graft watchdog filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station for misusing power to establish Shaheed Zia Charitable Trust, named after late president Ziaur Rahman. Meanwhile, the ACC on August 9 refuted BNP's claim of harassing the leader of the opposition by filing the case.- The Daily star August 10 2011.
HC asks govt to explain
The High Court on August 9 asked the government to explain in a week why its inaction in taking steps against ATM Azharul Islam for his remark "undermining" the Supreme Court should not be declared illegal. Azharul, acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, at a press conference at Jamaat office on July 19 said the government scrapped the caretaker government system by exploiting the Supreme Court. The court gave the order following a supplementary petition filed by Dhaka University teacher Prof Wahiduzzaman Chan who had earlier filed a writ petition challenging the remark of the Jamaat leader. An HC bench of Justice ATM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore issued a rule on July 25 asking Azharul to explain why he should not be punished for contempt of court by making the remark.- The Daily star August 10 2011.
