SC extends stay on Pintu's bail
The Supreme Court on June 16 extended till June 23 its chamber judge's order that stayed a high court order granting bail to former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu in a case filed in connection with the Pilkhana carnage. The full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Mozammel Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the government. Chamber Judge of Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on June 9 stayed till June 12 a High Court order that granted bail to Pintu in the case after hearing a petition filed by the government, seeking stay on the HC order.Earlier, Police filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station on February 28, 2009 in connection with the February 25-26 BDR carnage in Pilkhana headquarters in 2009.-The Daily star June 17 2011.
Altaf, Hafiz freed on bail
Former BNP ministers Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed were released on bail on June 15 in a case filed against them on charge of torching a vehicle on June 11. First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan passed the order after police produced them before the court with a ten-day remand prayer. After hearing both the sides, the magistrate cancelled the remand prayer and granted them bail in the case filed with Gulshan Police Station on June 11. The same court on June 13 granted them bail in another case for setting fire to a vehicle on June 4 in the city's Mohakhali area.Earlier, the two were arrested in the capital last Sunday, during hartal hours.- The Daily star June 16 2011.
Pollution: HC orders to shut brickfield
The High Court on June 13 asked the owner of Dattapara brickfield in Laksmipur to stop its operation for next three months to prevent pollution in the area. The court passed the order in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) on June 9. The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore also issued a rule upon the government and owner of the brickfield to explain within four weeks why setting up of the brickfield should not be declared illegal and should not be directed to relocate it from Dattapara. Bela in its petition said one Abdul Wadud has set up Dattapara Bricks and Company in 2009 on the agricultural land adjacent to private and public offices, including a school in violation of laws. - The Daily star June 14 2011.
Stop Jugitila hill cutting: HC
The High Court on June 13 directed the government to take steps to stop cutting Jugitila Hill at Amborkhana in Sylhet. Delivering a verdict on a writ petition, the court also ordered the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to protect the hill from cutting and encroachment. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore delivered the verdict after hearing a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela). The organisation filed the petition as public interest litigation on June 29, 2009 stating that one Abdul Awal has initiated to cut Jugitila Hill damaging the environment. The HC on the same day issued a rule upon the government and Abdul Awal to explain why they should not be directed to stop cutting the hill and to take steps to protect it. - The Daily star June 14 2011.
Hearing on charge framing against
850 on June 20
A Dhaka Court on June 12 deferred the hearing on charge framing against 850 accused in the BDR carnage case till June 20 following a time petition submitted by the prosecution. Judge Mohammad Zohurul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order after Special Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol appealed to the court to defer the date of charge framing hearing. The court on May 23 adjourned the trial proceeding till June 12 after the prosecution had completed reading out charges against 847 accused, including former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and Awami League leader Torab Ali in the BDR carnage case. Besides, on April 12, 26 and May 9 charges against 803 accused were read out by the prosecution. Of the 850 accused, three have died while 21 others are absconding. - The Daily star June 13 2011.

Hashem on July 5
The hearing on charge framing against Partex Group Chairman MA Hashem and seven others will be held on July 5 in a tax evasion case. Judge Mohammad Zohurul Haque of the Senior Special Judge's Court on June 12 fixed the date after the accused appeared before his court and appealed to fix a date for hearing a charge framing in the case. The seven others include Hashem's wife Sultana Hashem, his five sons Aziz-al Kaiser, Aziz-al Mahmud, Aziz-al Masud, Ashfaq Aziz and Shawkat Aziz and Joynal Abedin, general manager (finance and accounts) of the company.- The Daily star June 13 2011.
