SUST students issue ultimatum to VC to resign by tomorrow noon

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) students today issued an ultimatum to Vice-Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed to resign by tomorrow noon (12:00 pm).

They also declared to start a hunger strike till death if the VC does not resign by the time.

A spokesperson on behalf of the protesting students said these to the media at 10:15 pm, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

They also declared that they will continue their protest all night on campus in protest of not withdrawing the case filed by the police.

Earlier, they gave police an ultimatum till 10:00 pm to withdraw the case filed against 200 to 300 unnamed students in connection to Sunday's clash on campus.

STUDENTS REJECT TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION'S PROPOSAL

Earlier, the students, who have been demonstrating on the campus with a three-point demand including the resignation of the university's vice-chancellor, rejected the proposal of the teachers' association -- to solve the ongoing problem through talks.

A delegation of teachers' association led by President Prof Tulsi Kumar Das and General Secretary Mohibul Alam went to the agitating students this afternoon to discuss how to solve the ongoing problem but the protesting students refused to talk to them.

The protesting students also asked the teachers to express solidarity with their movement.

They vowed to continue movement until the demands are met.

Earlier in the day, the teachers held a talk with the university's Vice-Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.

It is to be noted that police last night filed a case, accusing over 200 "unnamed" students, in connection with the clash at SUST on Sunday evening.

The students today sent a letter to university's chancellor, President Abdul Hamid, demanding the termination of the VC and appointing a new VC.

Three days after their three-point demands, including the resignation of a hall provost, were not met, the demonstrators confined VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed inside the MA Wazed Miah IICT Building on Sunday afternoon.

Police later charged batons on the demonstrators to free the VC, leading to a clash.

Police then shot rubber bullets and exploded sound grenades to bring the situation under control.

At least 30 students were injured.
