A youth was shot dead during police action when the activists of BNP-led 18-party opposition combine brought out a procession in Malibagh of the capital this afternoon.
Mansur Pradhania, 20, was a first year student of Law Department at City University in Banani, said Manzur Samad, elder brother of the victim.
The victim used to live in Dakshin Khan Askona area of the city, he added.
Channel 24, a private television channel, reports that the victim is the president of ward No. 2 at Airport Thana unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Police went to action when the activists of 18-party alliance brought out a procession and hurled a crude bomb on the law enforcers around 11:45am, said Nasir Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC-investigation) of Rampura Police Station.
Soon after the incident, the law enforcers saw a body lying beside road, the OC said.
Later, they recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), he added..
But the OC could not elaborate the incident how Mansur, son of Abdur Razzak of Chandpur, sustained bullet wounds.
Meanwhile, Kripa Shindhu Bala, OC of the police station, told The Daily Star that a group of around 50 Jamaat-Shibir men attacked lawmen in front of Baitul Azim Shahidi Jame Mosque at Chowdhurypara in Malibagh with sticks, leaving four of cops injured.
The injured include one sub-inspector and three constables. Of them, constable Wahid was sent to the DMCH, Kripa Shindhu said.
The attackers also set fire to a police van on the spot.
The sudden attack on policemen prompted them to open fire in self-defence, the police official added.
