Amateur computer programmers and electronic engineers of Brac University (BU) yesterday demonstrated eight robots that can follow intricately drawn lines on the floor on their own.
The young scientists showed their prowess at a competition titled “Pathfinder 3” organised by the Robotics Club of BU on its campus in the capital.
Abdulla Hil Kafi, president of the club and a student of computer science, said the contest was significant as it combined both engineering and programming skills and required team efforts.
Eight teams of engineers and programmers, all undergraduate students of the university, fought in the contest.
Mohammad Khalilur Rahman, associate professor of computer science and engineering, examined the robots and instructed the participants on different aspects of robotics.
He said, “This sort of competitions can effectively encourage the first-year students in robotics and be able to take challenges.”
Addressing the students, Ashir Ahmed, associate professor of information science and electrical engineering at Kyushu University, Japan, said they should always try to find practical uses of what they studied.
He also explained how the use of internet and android devices can help farmers get better prices for their crops. “Developing a website with updated prices of agricultural goods across the country and making it accessible for farmers can empower the rural farmers' negotiating power,” he said.
