EU makes progress over asylum rules
European Union interior ministers made progress Thursday towards breaking a deadlock on sharing the burden of asylum seekers that has fallen mainly on frontline Mediterranean states Italy and Greece, officials said. The ministers meeting in Valletta drafted ideas for reforming the so-called Dublin rules that require asylum seekers to apply for refugee status in the countries where they first land, which is usually Greece and Italy.
