Violence on after polls
Clashes continued between rival groups over upazila polls in different districts yesterday, a day after the second phase of the elections ended.
Awami League activist Fazlur Rahman, 52, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday morning.
A resident of Debipur village in Benapole, Jessore, Fazlur came under attack from BNP-Jamaat men at Debipur Primary School polling centre in Chaugachha upazila during polling on Thursday, said Motiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chaugachha Police Station.
At least five people were injured in the attack and were admitted to upazila health complex. Later, Fazlur Rahman and Jahurul Islam were taken to the DMCH as their condition deteriorated.
Miscreants in Bagerhat cut the tendons in both legs of local BNP leader Abdul Mannan, 50, in Polerhat area of Ramchandrapur union yesterday afternoon.
Mannan, a joint secretary of Morrelganj upazila BNP, is running for the vice-president as a party rebel in the upazila polls scheduled for March 15. He was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Local BNP leaders think party rivals might have carried out the attack on Mannan.
In Chittagong, unidentified miscreants torched four houses of Hindus in two villages under Patia upazila on Thursday night, hours after the counting in the upazila polls ended there.
At least 10 Awami League activists were injured in Bhola as the supporters of party blessed chairman candidate and a rebel contestant clashed in Tazumuddin upazila around 9:00pm yesterday, said witnesses.
Police fired 10 tear gas shells to drive out the troublemakers. The upazila will go to polls on March 15.
In Pekua upazila of Cox's Bazar, unknown assailants injured Jubo League activist Mohammed Champa, 22, and three other AL activists in an attack in Kachari Pahar area of the upazila around 10:00am yesterday. Bullet-hit Champa was undergoing
treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
In another incident, BNP-Jamaat activists brought out a victory procession at Pekua bazar around 10:30pm on Thursday. As the BNP-Jamaat men chanted inflammatory slogans against the prime minister and the ruling AL, a clash broke out between the BNP-Jamaat and AL men. Police and Border Guard Bangladesh members reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
BNP men clashed with cops at the Upazila Parishad premises in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur around 11:30pm on Thursday after the BNP-backed candidates called for a boycott of the polls over vote-rigging.
At least 10 people including three cops were injured in the clash. Shibchar police filed two cases against 100 named and 3,000 unnamed BNP activists in this connection.
In Gopalganj, four people were wounded as supporters of Kotalipara upazila chairman elect Mujibor Rahman Hawlader attacked the followers of his contender Bimal Krishna Biswas on Thursday evening and yesterday morning. Both are local leaders of the AL.
Of the injured, two were admitted to the upazila health complex.
A Jatiya Party (JP) leader was stabbed allegedly by BNP men at Volar Chawra village under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
The victim is Shahabul Islam, 32, president of Mahendranagar union unit JP. He was admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, said police.
Earlier around 11:00pm on Thursday, agitated AL activists vandalised the district party office on the town's Thana Road over the defeat of a party favourite in the upazila polls.
The AL men blamed district AL general secretary Matiar Rahman and Sadar upazila AL president Golam Mostafa Swapan for the defeat of Nazrul Haque Patwary Bhola in the polls to Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.
