Villagers suffer as lone bridge lies broken
The lone bridge over Chatlakhali canal in Kalapara upazila that collapsed over two years ago still lies without any repair.
Built around 10 years ago, a large chunk of the vulnerable bridge collapsed in 2012 causing immense sufferings to over 5,000 people of Baliatali village.
Students and patients bear the brunt of the problem, locals said.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has built the bridge of steel component in 2004 to ease road communication between Kalapara-Kuakata and Char Baliatali village.
Local people took an alternative road about two kilometres away since the bridge became unfit for use after one of its steel made pillars collapsed in 2012.
A number of students of the village now go to their institutions by using the alternative road due to the break down of bridge over Chatlakhali canal, said Mosharrof Hossain, headmaster of Baliatali Govt Primary School.
Mohsin Hawlader, a local UP member, said whenever anyone falls sick the family members face serious trouble. "Taking the patient to the upazila town for treatment in time becomes a real challenge", he said.
Contacted, Pranab Kumar Sarkar, engineer of Kalapara LGED, said they recently visited the spot and already informed the matter to their higher authorities.
After getting the allocation, we will take necessary steps to renovate the bridge, said Pranab.
