'Thief' beaten to death by mob

A man was killed and six others were injured when a gang of robbers opened fire at them while fleeing after committing a robbery at Ambaria village in Kalukhali upazila in Rajbari district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Shafiuddin, 45, son of Elafat Mandol, of the same village, reports UNB.
Nur-e-Alam, officer in-charge of Kalukhali police station, said a gang of robbers, numbering 10-12, stormed into the house of Shahabuddin of the village around 2:30am and held the family members hostage at gunpoint.
They looted some gold ornaments, Tk 10,000 cash, a motorcycle and other valuables from the house.
Hearing the hue and cry, local people rushed to the spot and chased the robbers.
Sensing danger, the robbers fired several gunshots, leaving villager Shafiuddin dead on the spot and six others injured.
In Pabna, a suspected thief was beaten to death while another was injured by a mob at Tebaria under Ataikula PS yesterday noon.
The deceased was identified as Md. Rajon Hossain, 30, son of Pintu Mia of Chatiyani village in Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent.
Police and locals said, Rajon along with one Raju Ahmed went to steal battery from a Grameen Bank tower at Tebaria village at about 1:00pm.
At one stage, locals sensed the matter and chased them.
Later, a mob beat them up on the spot. Critically injured, both were admitted to Pabna General Hospital where Rajon succumbed to his injuries, said Md. Faizur Rahman, OC of Ataikula police station.
Raju is undergoing treatment at the hospital, the OC said.
