UP chairman, 3 others held for killing Sylhet Jubo League man
Police yesterday arrested four people, including a union parishad chairman, in connection with the killing of a Jubo League activist in Companiganj upazila on Friday.
Three of the arrestees are Kazi Abdul Wadud alias Alfu, chairman of Telikhal Union Parishad, Tota Mia, and Waiskuruni. Name of another arrestee could not be known as of filing of this report at 5:00pm.
Police also seized a licensed pistol of the UP chairman from Tota Mia's possession.
Officer-in-Charge Delwar Hossain of Companiganj Police Station said UP Chairman Alfu, also a member of AL upazila unit, was arrested in front of Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity office on Sylhet-Tamabil highway early yesterday while the rest from their respective houses in the upazila.
Meanwhile, the deceased's brother Abdul Haque filed an ejhar yesterday afternoon and recording of the case is under process, he added.
Locals said a gang of around 15 swooped on Jubo League activist Abdul Ali, 40, also a construction contractor in Companiganj upazila, soon after he got down from a boat in Katakhal area at around 5:30pm.
Ali along with the upazila LGED engineer went to Monurpar to visit a site of primary school. The gang stabbed Ali, shot him point black and left the scene. He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
There had been a longstanding rivalry between factions of the ruling party over control of the country's biggest stone quarry at Bholaganj in Companiganj.
Ali belonged to a faction led by Companniganj upazila AL General Secretary Aftab Ali. Police Superintendent Nur-e-Alam Mina said Ali might have been killed as a sequel to rivalry over control of the stone quarry.
