Underage girl murdered 11 days into marriage

A newly married underage girl was beaten to death allegedly by her husband over a dowry-related feud in Kharki area of the district town yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Rekha Khatun, 15, wife of Zahir Hossain, of the area.
Rekha was married with Zahir Hossain only 11 days ago. She was the daughter of Abdus Salam, a resident of Jalkar village in Manirampur upazila of the district.
After the marriage, Zahir demanded Tk 40,000 as dowry from Rekha's father and used to torture her for realising the money.
As Rekha failed to bring the amount, Zahir beat her up mercilessly yesterday afternoon, leaving her seriously injured. Later, she succumbed to her injures around 9.30pm, alleged family members and locals.
Enamul Haque, officer in-charge Jessore Kotwali police station, said Rekha's father filed a case with the PS in this connection.
Police arrested Manjurul Hossain and Manwar Hossain, two brothers of Zahir as the main accused went into hiding.
Away in Gaibandha, a housewife suffered brutal torture allegedly by her husband, who demanded dowry after seven years of their wedding, at Ramnathpur village in Gobindaganj upazila.
Abdur Rashid poured boiled pulse on Reshma Begum, daughter of Rezaul Karim of Taluk Kanupur village, burning her face and neck on November 22. He also confined her to a room without any treatment for five days, reports our correspondent.
On November 24, when Reshma's uncle Shajahan Mia went to meet his niece, Rashid's family members misbehaved with him. Shajahan informed the matter to his brother.
Following a complaint by Rezaul, police rescued Reshma from her confinement and admitted her to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH) on Thursday.
Later, the same night, Rezaul filed a case with Gobindaganj Police Station, accusing Rashid and his family members. Police on Friday morning arrested Rashid and his father in this connection.
Police quoting victim's family members said, Rashid was demanding Tk 1 lakh as dowry since their marriage.
On November 22, he had an altercation with Reshma over the issue and at one stage of their altercation he poured boiled pulse on Reshma while she was cooking at the kitchen.
