Customs officials detained two Indian nationals with six gold bars, weighing 5.5kgs, and foreign currency, worth over Tk 18 lakh, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday.
The duo — Dinesh Kumar Jain and Suresh Kumar — in a flight of Etihad Airways landed around 4:30am from Dubai, said Wajed Ali, an assistant commissioner of customs.
On secret information, the customs officials stopped Dinesh first and then Suresh at the immigration zone.
They recovered one gold bar, weighing 1kg, from Dinesh while the others, weighing 4.5kg, and 86,000 dirham (currency of the United Arab Emirates) from Suresh, Ali added.
The value of the six gold bars is worth about Tk 2.5 crore, he added.
Our Chittagong correspondent adds: Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a man with five gold bars, weighing 41 tolas, worth around Tk 25 lakh, at Chittagong Railway Station yesterday.
Acting on secret information, police searched Shafikur Rahman, of Satkania upazila, who was waiting at a platform with several books in his hand.
Each gold bar was taped inside a book, GRP police officials said.
One of the bars has "Dubai" inscribed in it, police added.
Shafikur told police that he was paid Tk 5,000 to deliver the consignment.
A case was filed in this regard.
