Two housewives killed over dowry in 2 districts

Two housewives were killed allegedly by their husbands and in-laws for dowry in Sirajganj and Laxmipur districts on Sunday.

In Sirajganj, a woman was strangled for dowry in Tarash upazila of the district, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The deceased is Ayesha Khatun, 20, wife of Shariful Islam of Binshara village.

Police and locals said Ayesha married Shariful last year. After their marriage, Shariful and his family members often tortured Ayesha for Tk one lakh as dowry.

Following an altercation over the issue on Sunday night, Ayesha's husband and in-laws strangled her and then hanged the body from the ceiling of her room.

On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The deceased's father filed a case against Shariful and his parents, said Md Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tarash Police Station. 

Police arrested Ayesha mother-in-law Farida Begum, said the OC, adding that Shariful went into hiding after the incident.

Away in Laxmipur, a pregnant woman was beaten to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry at Charmonsha under Sadar upazila the same night, reports our correspondent.

The deceased is Poly Begum, wife of Sumon Hossain, a resident of the area.

Poly married Sumon a few years ago. After their marriage, Sumon and his family members used to torture Poly for dowry, said her brother Monir Hossain.

Suman locked in an altercation with Poly over the dowry issue in the afternoon. At one stage, he and his family members beat up Poly, leaving her dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.

The body bore several injury marks, said Rubel Hossain, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station. Sumon and his family members went into hiding after the incident, said the SI.
