Two BCL men held on charge of killing Tangail Sramik Dal leader
The Detective Branch of Police (DB) on Friday arrested two BCL men on charge of killing Golam Azam, organising secretary of Tangail district unit of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal.
The arrestees are Shakil Kabir, 22, joint secretary of Tangail district unit of BCL, and his elder brother Shamim Kabir alias Russel, 24, also a BCL activist.
The detectives arrested the BCL men from Gharinda area in Tangail town at noon. On the basis of their statement, the law enforcers recovered a pistol from Sabalia area in the town, said Golam Mahfeez, officer-in-charge of Tangail DB police.
Police produced the two BCL men in a court here yesterday, seeking seven-day remand. The court fixed April 13 (today) for hearing the remand prayer, said Sub-inspector Chandan Kumar Chakraborty, investigation officer (IO) of the murder case.
They are among the eight accused in Golam Azam murder case. After recovery of the pistol, DB police also filed an arms case against the two arrestees.
Sramik Dal leader Golam Azam was shot and stabbed by a gang at his furniture shop at Gharinda area in the town on April 1.
Critically injured Azam, also president of auto-rickshaw Workers Union, was taken to Tangail General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital at around 4:30pm.
Azam's wife Shilpi Akhter filed a murder case with Tangail Model Police Station the same day against eight people, including BCL men Shakil and Russel. The case was shifted to DB on the day.
