Libya killings: Govt trying to bring back victims’ bodies
The government is trying to bring home the bodies of the 26 Bangladeshi migrants who were killed allegedly by human traffickers in Libya on Thursday.
Nasreen Jahan, joint secretary (mission and welfare) of the expatriates' welfare ministry, today said the government has already communicated with the Libyan authorities via Bangladesh mission in Tripoli to this end.
"They [Libyan authorities] have been asked to complete the formalities as soon as possible to make way for bringing the bodies back home," she told The Daily Star over phone.
Bringing back the Bangladeshis injured in the incident has also been discussed, she said, adding that some of the injured will be released from hospital soon.
The Libyan authorities, however, are yet to respond, she said.
Nasreen Jahan said the expatriates' welfare ministry, foreign ministry and home ministry are working jointly in the matter.
Alleged human traffickers killed 30 migrants including 26 Bangladeshis and four Africans in the city of Mizdah, some 200 kilometres away from Tripoli, around dawn on Thursday.
Eleven other Bangladeshi migrants sustained bullet wounds from the incident while one Bangladeshi managed to escape from the scene.
The injured are now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Tripoli while the bodies of the deceased have been kept at a mortuary in Mizdah.
