Thakurgaon transport workers block highway
Vehicular movement on Panchagarh-Thakurgaon-Dhaka highway remains suspended since last night as transport workers put barricade in Thakurgaon demanding immediate release of eight co-workers detained yesterday.
Following the blockade, hundreds of vehicles got stuck on the highway, creating a heavy jam, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
Local administration sat in an emergency meeting at Thakurgaon DC office around 11:00am today to settle the issue, which was continuing till 2:30pm when the report was filed.
The agitated transport workers blocked the highway around 12midnight by keeping their vehicles on the highway in criss-cross pattern after eight of their fellows were nabbed by police.
Police last night picked up eight transport workers of Thakurgaon Truck and Tank-lorry Workers’ Union when they were collecting tolls from different goods-laden vehicles at the Thakurgaon Bus Terminal.
Officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Police Station AKM Mehedi Hasan said that the transport workers were arrested as they were engaged in unlawful activities like collecting tolls.
Denying the allegation, Abdul Jabbar, general secretary of the union, said the strike will continue until their fellow workers are released.
