Tangail Sramik Dal leader shot dead
Unidentified criminals shot dead a local leader of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the labourer wing of BNP, at Garinda area in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
The victim Golam Azam, 47, was the organising secretary of the district unit of Sramik Dal and son of Afaz Uddin of Bil Gharinda village in Sadar upazila.
Protesting the killing, district unit of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal called a half-day hartal in Tangail municipal area for today.
Quoting witnesses, Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station said the incident occurred around 3:30pm when a group of five youth riding on three motorcycles shot and stabbed him with sharp weapon while Azam was sitting at his furniture shop, leaving him critically injured.
The gang members, however, fled the scene as soon locals came ahead and later rushed him to Tangail General Hospital, the OC added.
Ashraful Islam, younger brother of the victim said doctors referred Azam to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
But he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital around 4:00pm, Ashraful added.
Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police in Tangail said the motive behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately but they are trying to nab the killers.
Later in the evening, leaders and activists of BNP brought out a procession in the town protesting the killing.
