Sylhet AL greets unelected city convening body
Sylhet city Awami League leaders yesterday greeted the newly selected convening committee of the city unit of Awami Jubo League, the party's youth front, on Monday night, amid protests by the rival faction men who were not included in the body.
The protesters said the new 61-member body was dominated by "opportunists and outsiders", including a union parishad member, an NGO official, and an expatriate in Canada.
About 200 agitators led by Sudip Dey, the outgoing acting president of the unit, marched the city streets and rallied at Shaheed Minar, accusing Jubo League presidium member Ahmed Al Kabir and Finance Minister AMA Muhith of swaying the formation of the new body.
Jubo League high-ups announced the committee on Sunday with Alam Khan Mukti, an ex-leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, as convener and four others as joint conveners.
On Monday night, the new leaders were congratulated by the city AL President Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, also former mayor, and General Secretary Asad Uddin Ahmed at Kamran's house.
The convening body is tasked with forming a full-fledged committee for the unit in the next three months through a council. The unit held its last council, which should take place every three years, in 2005.
