Sweater factory workers demand piece rate hike

Workers of Helicon Ltd in Savar demonstrated yesterday for a hike in piece rates.
Helicon is an export-oriented sweater factory at the Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) on the outskirts of the capital.
The ownership of the factory changed hands recently, and the new management has cut basic salaries of workers and slashed the piece rates, a worker said on condition of anonymity.
The workers and the factory management were called for mediation, said Md Mostafizur Rahman, director of Ashulia Industrial Police.
The incident is not related to the countrywide strike called by Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Committee, he said.
The factory management could not be reached for comments.
