Sunken cargo vessel located in Meghna after 5 days
Six days into the capsize in Meghna river, divers today located the sunken cargo vessel in Chandpur this morning.
MV Chitolmari carrying 1,300 tonnes of cement clinker capsized in Meghna near Puranbazar of Chandpur after an oil tanker, MV Hekmat, hit it on August 26.
All the 12 crew of the vessel swam to safety soon after the accident.
The divers appointed by cargo owner Sheikh Helal successfully located the vessel under 110 feet water around 10:00am today, said Mobarak Hossain, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BITWA).
They used their own equipment during the search operation, our Chandpur correspondent reports quoting the deputy director.
But the cargo cannot be rescued now due to heavy current, he said.
“We will try to pull it up when the river becomes normal,” he added.
Two other launches -- MV Dinar and MV Nasrin -- capsized at the same point with hundreds of passengers in the past but those could not be traced.
