Strawberry cultivation popular in Narsingdi
After Rajshahi region, commercial farming of strawberry is now earning popularity in Narsingdi.
At present, a good number of educated unemployed youths of the district have engaged themselves in strawberry farming.
Nazrul Islam, who started strawberry cultivation at Shallaad union in Belabo upazila two and a half years ago, said at first he planted 500 strawberry plants on 20 decimals of land in October 2012. The trees started getting fruits within three months which he began plucking in January.
Initially he plucked 8 to 10 kilograms of strawberries per day from his orchard and sold every kilogram for Tk 400 at Bhairab fruit market.
In the last two years, he expanded his orchard and got about 20 kilograms of strawberries per day, he said.
This year, Nazrul have already earned Tk 5 lakh by selling the juicy fruits and hope to earn even more during the remaining days of the season till April. He is also growing strawberry saplings.
Suvash Chandra Gayan, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension, said cultivation of strawberry is more profitable as the juicy fruit has a great demand in local markets.
The profitable cultivation has drawn and employed many educated youths of the district, he added.
