State minister for land for naming Padma bridge after Hasina
Terming Sheikh Hasina the architect and dreamer of the Padma bridge, State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury yesterday proposed in parliament that the multipurpose bridge be named “Jononetri Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge.”
“On behalf of the august parliament, I am proposing the name...And I hope my proposal will be accepted in the House,” he said on a point of order, amid thumping of desks by the ruling party lawmakers.
Hasina, also leader of the House, was present in parliament at that time.
The state minister said the premier's recent visits to Japan and China would be considered historic for the country. “The gift she has brought from China is a rare precedent.”
Earlier, former forest and environment minister Hasan Mahmud advised the media not to publish or broadcast any news of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, terming him immature and foolish.
“I will urge all the media 'please don't publish any immature and foolish speech of him' [Tarique]. The nation will benefit then,” he said.
Hasan, also central publicity secretary of the Awami League, launched a personal attack on BNP chief Khaleda Zia and former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury.
The former minister described Badruddoza, also chairman of Bikolpodhara Bangladesh, as a plotter of the Zia killing and said Khaleda Zia instigated him in the assassination.
Hasan also made some remarks on Khaleda's outfit during her visit to Zia's mazar. The Daily Star refrained from writing those remarks considering those abusive.
After Hasan, independent MP Rustom Ali Farazi pointed out the sorry state of MP buildings on Manik Mia Avenue. “There is no atmosphere in and outside the buildings for living there,” he said, without elaborating.
