Serving happiness to the underprivileged this Ramadan
Under Bidyanondo Foundation's programme, 'Ek Takay Ahar' hundreds of street dwelling children, beggars, elderly people and physically and mentally challenged people hanging around streets or stations get their fundamental need of regular meals in exchange of just one taka. This Ramadan, in collaboration with Kolpolok Limited, they launched an automated food vending machine, which is operated through fingerprints. With it, one person can avail food once a day for free. According to founder and volunteer of Bidyanondo Foundation Kishor Kumar Das, so far, thirty machines have been placed in different areas all over the country, including Dhaka, Chattogram, Cox's Bazaar, Rajshahi and Rangpur.
During Ramadan, they are serving iftar items and after Ramadan they plan to serve regular meals, including boxes of rice, meat, fish and vegetables, the same way they ran 'Ek Takar Ahar.' The food items are replaced every six hours for quality assurance. Kishor, an engineer by profession, is the primary designer of the vending machine. 'When I was a kid, I used to wait in lines for hours in temples to get food," shares Kishor. " I know how that feels and I wanted to do this to serve underprivileged people." They aim to serve more than 2000 people per day.
