Avoid pre-election clashes
At the onset of a national election, we hope the polls are going to be free and fair with the participation of all political parties. The lessons of previous elections are not encouraging as people of different political parties engaged in violent clashes which threaten the everyday lives of the masses. Instead of jointly creating a favorable atmosphere for healthy competition, it seems that for political parties, winning by hook or by crook is their ultimate end. Unwanted harassment, killings, setting vehicles on fire, destroying public property—the lives and livelihoods of people are at high risk during these times.
Though law enforcement agencies seem ready to tackle any situation, we should be very careful in these times. We should extend our helping hands to the Election Commission and demand that safe and conducive conditions are provided so that pre-election clashes can be avoided.
