Can Buriganga be saved from all the polluters?
For the last 15 to 20 years, Buriganga River's water has been thick black like burnt engine oil. In 2000, the oxygen level in Buriganga's water was 0.2%, and after 2019 that level went down to 0.0%. The tannery industry was moved to Savar to save the Buriganga, but now it is putting the Dhaleshwari River at risk. Steps have been taken to disconnect power from 50 dyeing factories to protect Buriganga from toxic chemicals but it was of no use.
The Daily Star reporter Mostafa Yousuf joins Debjani Shyama to discuss the current condition of the Buriganga in today's Straight from Star Newsroom.
