Mbappe double drives France into knockout round
Courtesy of a brace from Kylian Mbappe, France beat Denmark 2-1 in World Cup Group D clash on Saturday at an electric 974 Stadium and the defending champions became the first team this edition to qualify for the Round of 16.
After a goalless first half, Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 61th minute with a splendid combination play with Theo Hernandez from the left flank. Denmark, however, took only seven minutes to equalise as Andreas Christensen headed home from a Christian Eriksen corner.
The Danish resilience ended eventually as Mbappe capitalised on an Antoine Griezmann cross from close-range in the 86th minute.
Earlier in the first-half, France were the far more dangerous side throughout and had several chances to grab a lead - the best coming in the 21st minute when an Adrien Rabiot header forced a diving save from Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
