Tamim’s wait for landmark 5k runs extended
It looks like Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal's wait for reaching landmark 5000 Test runs has been extended as the left-hander had to retire hurt after suffering a cramp in the second session of the third day's play during the Tigers' first Test against Sri Lanka in Chattogram today.
Tamim, after having batted for three sessions in the scorching heat in Chattogram, had seemingly suffered a cramp on his right wrist. The incident took place in the 58th over in the second session when the left-hander tried to cut a Ramesh Mendis delivery, and despite managing to take a single, Tamim seemingly twisted his wrist.
He completed the run but needed immediate attention from opposition players at the non-striker's end. Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam attended the player before he went on to bat for a while. However, since then, Tamim looked to be struggling, going down on his knees on a few occasions.
Tamim batted till the end of the second session but did not come out to bat after the break as Mushfiqur Rahim was accompanied by Liton Das.
Tamim, before being retired hurt, was on 133 off 217 deliveries, just 19 runs shy of reaching 5000 runs in Test. He could have been the first to reach the landmark score, beating Mushfiqur to the punch, who was unbeaten on 14 before Tea, needing another 54 runs to reach the feat.
