'Overnight a player becomes Bradman, next day he needs a place to hide'
Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim said that it is only in Bangladesh that a player reaches the heights of the greatest cricketers overnight because of just one good innings.
"When a player scores a century, suddenly in Bangladesh he becomes a greater player than [Don] Bradman. The next day when the same player fails, he needs to find a place to hide. It is only seen in our country," said Mushfiqur today at the press conference following the fourth day's play of the ongoing first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
Mushfiqur reached another milestone in his career as he became the first Bangladeshi batter to score 5000 runs in Tests today. The experienced cricketer achieved the feat on way to registering his eighth Test ton, putting an end to a fairly longstanding lean patch in the format.
"We will bid goodbye with smiling faces. But do you have a proper replacement? Cricket in Bangladesh would probably prosper further if you could focus on that," wrote Mondy.
The 35-year-old, known as 'Mr. Dependable', has often faced heavy criticisms whenever he failed to live up to his reputation. But the cricketer has bounced back time and again to prove his doubters wrong.
"I don't know who these people are but I think it would be better for the players if these people can behave in a more matured way," Mushfiqur urged everyone to stop overhyping any player.
Replying to Mushfiqur's critics, the cricketer's wife Jannatul Mondy left a message on her Instagram that soon went viral on social media.
"We will bid goodbye with smiling faces. But do you have a proper replacement? Cricket in Bangladesh would probably prosper further if you could focus on that," wrote Mondy.
Mushfiqur, however, made no comments when the matter was brought up during the press conference.
"I actually don't know what she wrote. I will get to know what she meant once I talk to her," Mushfiqur said.
