Swadhin Bangla footballer Nowsheruzzaman dies of Covid-19
Swadhin Bangla Football team striker AKM Nowsheruzzaman died of the Covid-19 at Ibn Sina Hospital tonight. He was 72.
Nowsheruzzaman left behind his wife, one son, one daughter and a lot of well-wishers to mourn.
"He had been on life support for the past one week at Ibn Sina Hospital. My cousin and sister-in-law tested positive for Covid-19 about two weeks before. The sister-in-law recovered but my brother left us today," said Nawsheruzzaman's cousin Sayeed Uz Zaman to The Daily Star.
Nowsheruzzaman was initially admitted at Mugda General Hospital before he was transferred to Green Life Hospital after his condition deteriorated. He was finally taken to the Ibn Sina Hospital to be put on life support.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took responsibility for his treatment.
The sportsman, who was also a Dhaka University blue, also played cricket for Mohammedan SC. He used to open the batting for Mohammedan along with former national cricket captain Raqibul Hasan. He also holds the record for scoring most goals in a season for Mohammedan.
Sayeed Uz Zaman informed that the dead body of the former footballer will be taken to his home district Chandpur and laid to rest tomorrow.
